In the heart of rural Palm City, surrounded on three sides by cows grazing lazily in their pasture, Palm City Elementary School opened its doors in August of 1958 to 137 children, grades 1-6. With five teachers dedicated to teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic, the school initiated an academic policy directed at helping all students reach their fullest potential. Much growth has occurred since the doors were first opened, including the operation of the school's first library in 1963 and the addition of half day kindergarten in the late 1960's.
As the population of Palm City increased, portable classrooms were brought in until 1980, when new construction was completed to accommodate 760 students, K-5. During the 1988-89 school year we experienced a student population explosion with enrollment approaching 900. In January of 1990, a new wing was opened housing an art suite, computer lab, resource and exceptional education classrooms. During the 1995-96 school year, the student enrollment burgeoned to almost 1200 students, and construction of the second elementary school in Palm City began. In 1995, we became one of the cluster sites for gifted education in Martin County. Currently, our current enrrollment is between 600 - 700 students.
One of our finest accomplishments was the designing and building of our 10,000 square foot playground, Wildcat Wonderland, built March 13-1, 1991 with over 12,000 volunteer hours. As twenty years of sun and weather were not kind to the wooden structure, we were forced, for safety’s sake, to replace the playground. We just completed Wildcat 2, same size, same location, but made of recycled plastic material which is expected to last a minimum of 30 years. It includes an artificial turf surface, is ADA accessible, and is compliant with current safety standards. The PTA, the school community, the district, and the county worked together to make this happen, and will all enjoy this community playground for many years to come.
